Take a Peek at our Week

Language Arts

Writer's Workshop:
This week in Writer's Workshop we will continue telling our story in pictures! We will continue writing in our journals by adding the date at the bottom and illustrating our story at the top! We will also begin adding labels to our writing! We will label pictures with their beginning sounds, for example "sun" would be labeled with an "S."
We will also learn to new SNAP words! SNAP words are high frequency words that are found most commonly in English texts.  We call them SNAP Words because we learn them so that we will know them in a SNAP!
This week we will learn the words: "I" and "like"

Reader's Workshop:
This week we will begin a new unit called "We are Storybook Readers!" We will talk about how we can read and re-read books again and again to learn more of the story!  We will use the text "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" to practice our storybook reading!

Phonics:
This week we will continue focusing on the common sounds that letters represent!  Feel free to watch the video below with your child to hear how we correctly pronounce each sound!   We practice this in class too! So far we have worked on the first 10 letters! We will add the rest this week!

Math

In Math this week, we will continue working on our numeracy skills! We will focus on subitizing! Subitizing means to look at a structured arrangement and recognize how many are there, rather than counting. For example, when you roll a dice, you know when you land on a 6, rather than counting each of the dots individually! We will play many fun subitizing games, sing songs, and do lots of hand-on subitizing and counting activities during Math Workshop!

Social Studies

The next few weeks, we will continue our study about Rules in our school, Home, and Community. We will listen to books, videos, and write about rules.  We will learn the difference between a rule and a law and how rules and laws keep us safe.

On Monday, September 12th, we will get to check out a book from our TCE Library!  Look in your child's backpack!  We will return book the following Monday, and get a new book to take home!

Science

We will continue our unit on Properties of Objects by observing and recording properties of objects that are different in shape, color, and texture.  We will learn how materials can be combined together to make new objects. We learned this past week that some changes are permanent and some changes can be changed back so they are temporary.  Please ask your child to give you examples!
