Kindergarten News November 2nd - November 6th 2015

What we’re

      Workin’ on next week..

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts we will be practicing writing in our journals!  We are going to work on writing while using a finger space between words, starting with a capital letter, ending with a period, and adding an excellent illustration to match our words.  We will learn two new word wall words:  "the" and "little."  Book bags will come home again on Monday, thanks so much for reading with your kiddos!

Math

We will be continuing our study on how to compare numbers. We will be continue to words such as greater than, less than, equal to, larger and smaller. Throughout the week we will be choosing the tools that are best for us to help find the larger or smaller number. We will start using the greater than, less than and equal sign to complete mathematical sentences.

We will also continue to work on our counting skills! Your child should be able to count to at least 25 and we are now working on counting to 50. We are also working on counting by tens starting anywhere! They have been doing a wonderful job with this! I am truly blown away with how quickly they are picking up the patterns in numbers!
(example: counting by 10's starting at 8: 8, 18, 28, 38.....)

Science / Social Studies
In Science we will be learning about the life cycle and parts of a plant.  In Social Studies we will be learning about our families and how they are important to our lives!  As we prepare for Thanksgiving we will begin to discuss how we are thankful for our families and friends.

Kindergarten news: October 5th- October 9th

What We're Learning!
                                           Language Arts
We will continue to review the word wall words we have learned so far. Your child should be able to recognize and spell the following words: a, can, I, like, see, and said.  This week we will also be adding the word "are." and your child will learn how to write at least two sentences on a single topic.
Example: I like dogs. Dogs are fun.

We will also be starting our handwriting boo next week. This will be a time that we will be focusing on forming our letters correctly as well as holding our pencils properly.
Our library day is on Tuesday. Please enjoy the library books that your child will bring home each week and then return them on Tuesday morning so that they will be able to check out a new book!
Math

We will be continuing our unit on numbers by working with counting different quantities and writing the amounts, talking about place value (1's and 10's), as well as working with representing numbers in new ways ( tally marks).  We will also be looking at different ways that we can sort things and organize our thinking (graphing). I cannot wait to see the different ways that everyone will show their thinking when working on our data analysis.

Don't forget that I will occasionally be putting math city challenges on my twitter account for your child to complete!

If you did not receive an email asking you to sign up for your child's online portfolio account on SeeSaw, please email me with the correct email you would like to get notifications on when your child uploads things to their account. (kmckinney@coppellisd.com)

We are collecting any blue jeans that you are not using/wearing any more! We are going to be doing our very first global service learning project this month. We will be helping to make closed toe shoes for children in Africa out of blue jeans. If you would like a little more information before we get started, please click on the link below! More information will be coming home as we get closer to starting this global service learning!

Science and Social Studies

Next week in science we will explore fabric to discover its properties, discuss how it is made and how it can be taken apart. We cannot wait to do the dyeing experiment! If your career connects to this in any way, please let us know! We would love make a career connection with the kids!

Kindergarten is collecting gently used shoes for our shoe drive! We will be using these shoes in our first Engineering unit as well as donating them to various charities in our community.

In Social Studies we will be ending our unit on "Watch Over Me". We have learned how important it is to take responsibility to be a good citizen.  How our school community is like our city community, and why our community needs people to work.  We know rules, laws and authority figures help us in our home, school, and community.  Sequencing history helps us keep track of how things change over time.
