Kindergarten News: October 3rd - October 7th

What we’re
Workin’ on this week..
Language Arts / Social Studies
This week we will begin a study on Fairy Tales!!  We are going to learn about the characteristics of a fairy tale, read some fairy tales, and  we are going to have a surprise visit from a REAL Fairy Tale Princess! She is going to read us her very famous story about her very famous shoe! :) We will be connecting this study to our new science unit on improving a shoe!  We will also learn two more word wall words "go" and "but."    In our journal we will be learning how to write two sentences on a single topic ex. "I like pumpkins.  Pumpkins are orange."

Math

This week we will continue our exploration of number sense. We will be starting math stations within the classroom. This is a great time for learners to explore number sense in a fun way with their friends in the classroom! Please make sure to check your email for a note home from SEESAW! This is an online learning journal that all learners will have access to that will allow you to see what your child is doing in class!

Thank you for working with your child to make sure that they are able to do the following things:
1. Counting to 25 and beyond (with and without objects)
2. Counting backwards from 20
3. Reading and writing our numbers
4. Giving the numbers before and after a given number

Here are two power point presentations to help your child recognize groups of numbers as well as numbers out of order!

Science

This week in science, we will be starting our first engineering project! We will be using the engineering process to improve the shoe.

We will be discussing how things are created to help people do things and then over time, people improve them to make them better. Your child will be working in a group to go through the steps to imagine, plan, create, improve and share their shoe and how it works! We cannot wait to send home all of the things that we are working on! Please keep an eye out for pictures of all the wonderful things we will be doing!

As a challenge, we are inviting all students to practice tying their shoes! If at the end of our engineering project, your child can tie their shoes, they will receive a certificate! Check out the video below to help your child learn!
