First Grade News January 29th-February 2nd

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts

This week in spelling we will focus on the plurals by adding -es. Spelling test will be on Friday!  In Writing we are working on writing about historical figures or writing historical text.  We are really looking back and remembering to use capital letters and periods!  We are also making sure we capitalize all proper nouns!

Social Studies
This week in Social Studies we will continue our unit on Famous Americans.  We will read  about and discuss Abe Lincoln.  Our class timeline is looking awesome! It shows how events from the past are put in chronological order and affect our world today.  We are moving back to the 1800's this week!

Math

In math this week we will finish up learning our addition strategies. We will play games, complete stations, and practice several ways to become addition experts.

Homework note: PLEASE make sure your child is doing Reflex Math for 15 minutes 2 times a week. It is crucial that our learners are practicing their addition and subtraction facts outside of class time.

Science

In science this week, we will be finishing up our unit on Earth Science. We will actually move a little outside of our Earth and talk about objects in our sky. We will learn about how the objects in our sky move in different patterns and have different purposes.

Important Dates:

February 14th - Valentine's Day Parties at 2:00 (more info coming soon)
February 19th - No School for Students (Staff Development Day)
February 23rd - 6 Flags Reading Logs are due! (more info below)

Yearbooks

Calling all TCE Texans!! Please purchase your 2017-2018 TCE Yearbook online!
The PTO will have a very limited supply to sell at the end of the year. As of now the deadline to purchase and build ads is January 15th.

Shoes for PE

Please make sure your child is wearing the appropriate shoes on PE days! We know how warm and fuzzy boots are this time of year, but it is hard for them to play games in PE while wearing them. If your child would like to wear their warm boots and bring tennis shoes to change into, that is always fine!

1C and 1D: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

What We're Working on This Week:

This week in LA we will get a new spelling list on Tuesday.  We will focus on the r controlled vowels or the bossy r (ir, er, ur). Spelling test will still be on Friday!  We will also continue learning about NOUNS (a person, place, or thing).  Book bags will come home on Tuesday! Please read your books each night and complete the "Text to Self" readers response on one of your books.  Please return book bags on Fridays!

Math

In Math we will be continuing our unit on addition and subtraction. This is our biggest and most in depth unit we will study this year! We will explore several strategies for adding and subtracting, and we will discuss what makes a strategy "efficient" for us! We will explore these strategies by playing games, completing fun stations, and lots and lots of practice! This is one reason it is so crucial our learners are on Reflex Math at home... we want them to be confident in their facts!

Science

In science we are learning and discovering all about air and weather. We have learned how we can all be meteorologists and track weather data. We will keep track of the weather in Coppell to make weather graphs. We will also track the weather in other various places around our world. This week in particular we are tracking weather from cities around the world and comparing it to our weather in Coppell.
