First Grade News: February 26th - March 2nd


What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts

This week in spelling we will focus on words with the -ie and igh phonograms.  In Writing we will continue working on writing about historical figures and other non-fiction text. We are also going learn about VERBS and practice writing poems as well!

Thursday 1C & 1D


Social Studies
This week in Social Studies we will wrap up our unit on Famous Americans. We will focus on Betsy Ross and the founder of our country!  The kids have really enjoyed this unit and have gotten into the history of our nation and those who helped to shape it!  It has been very fun! 




Math

In math this week we will be working on applying our addition and subtraction strategies to solve word problems! We will learn about looking for key words, applying strategies, and checking our answers. 
     


Homework note: PLEASE make sure your child is doing Reflex Math for 15 minutes 2 times a week. It is crucial that our learners are practicing their addition and subtraction facts outside of class time.


Science

In science this week, we will be learning all about plants! We will each get to plant our own seeds in our classroom in order to observe the plant life cycle. We will become experts about all the parts of the plant and how each part functions to keep the plant alive!

Please be sure to join us on Thursday, March 8th for TCE Open House!  You are invited to visit the classrooms and the school from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. (come and go) to view your child's work and see how much they have grown this year!  It is a really fun evening for your children to "show off" all their accomplishments over the course of the year!

First Grade News: February 20th-23rd

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts

This week in spelling we will focus on words with the -ea phonogram. Spelling lists and book bags will come home Tuesday.  Spelling test will be on Friday! In Writing we will continue working on writing about historical figures or writing historical text. We are also going learn about other transition words we can use for First, Next, Last.

Wednesday 1A & 1B
Thursday 1C & 1D

Social Studies
This week in Social Studies we will continue our unit on Famous Americans. We will focus on George Washington and the people that helped to start our country!  We are going to begin a little project to share with you at  Open House! :) 


Math

In math this week we will continue to learn all about subtraction and strategies for solving subtraction problems! We will learn several ways to solve subtraction problems and become fluent in our facts. We are looking forward to playing lots of math games to practice our facts, too!

Science

In science this week, we will be finishing up our learning about objects in the sky. We will talk about the rotation and revolution of the Earth. We will learn how the rotating and revolving of the Earth causes patterns in the sky.

Other Important Information

Shoes for PE



Please make sure your child is wearing the appropriate shoes on PE days! We know how warm and fuzzy boots are this time of year, but it is hard for them to play games in PE while wearing them. If your child would like to wear their warm boots and bring tennis shoes to change into, that is always fine!

First Grade News: February 5th-9th


What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts

This week in spelling we will focus on words with -ng and -nk. Spelling test will be on Friday! In Writing we will continue working on writing about historical figures or writing historical text. We are really looking back and remembering to use capital letters and periods! We are also making sure we capitalize all proper nouns!

Wednesday 1A & 1B
Thursday 1C & 1D

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies we will continue our unit on Famous Americans. We will wrap up our study on Abe Lincoln and discuss a few other famous Americans from his time like Sojourner Truth, Harriett Tubman and Fredrick Douglas. Our class timeline is looking awesome! It shows how events from the past are put in chronological order and affect our world today. 




Math

In math this week we will be learning all about subtraction and strategies for solving subtraction problems! We will learn several ways to solve subtraction problems and become fluent in our facts. We are looking forward to playing lots of math games to practice our facts, too!

In science this week, we will be learning all about our Earth in relation to our galaxy. We will learn about the Sun and Moon and how these objects follow a pattern in our sky. We will also be sending a note home on Monday about observing the moon each night with your child, so please be looking for that!

Other Important Information


Valentine's Day Party


We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day at school on Wednesday, February 14th! Please have your child address a Valentine card to each person in their homeroom class. A class list is coming home in your child's folder so then can address one to each classmate. Please have them bring their cards with them to school on or before Wednesday, February 14th! We will be making our Valentine bags (to collect our Valentines in) at school February 9th!

On Wednesday, February 14th we will open Valentines and celebrate with a class party from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. All parents are welcome to join us at the party!
