First Grade News October 2nd - October 6th

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts 
This week in Language Arts we will continue our spelling review of short vowels. We will focus on words with the short e sound. We will also be learning how to add a topic sentence, three supporting details (with transition words like first, next, and last), and a concluding sentence to our writing! Everyone is doing great!! We will definitely get a journal entry or two on SeeSaw this week! Sorry we didn't quite get that far last week! We will also begin reading folktalkes, traditional tales, and fables. These are traditional and familiar stories that help us learn how to make text to self connections in our reading!

Social Studies

We will wrap up our study on citizenship and being a good citizen. We have learned a lot about what a citizen is and what our responsibilities are as citizens! Look for your child's "Good Citizen" Folder to come home at the end of the week! We have collecting all our work to send home in a Citizenship Showcase Collection!

Math

In math this week, we will continue learning all about place value. This week we will continue to focus on decomposing numbers. What that means is realizing that numbers can be built in different ways. We will continue to explore these concepts in stations, small group guided math, and playing math games. We will be uploading things to our SeeSaw accounts, so be on the lookout for great learning!

Science

This week in science we will be finishing out unit all about matter. We will end our unit by reviewing all of the vocabulary terms we have learned throughout the unit. We will get to play several games and complete several fun activities to solidify our learning! We are excited about how much we have learned all about solids and liquids!

We will fill you in on our beginning of the year assessments, some goals for your child, and answer any questions you might have! We know this is not a lot of time but if we do not finish we are happy to have you back in another day! We are so enjoying all of your sweet kids and we can't wait to meet with you to talk about them! :)

First Grade News September 25th - September 29th

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts 
This week in Language Arts we will continue our spelling review of short vowels.  We will focus on words with the short u sound.  We will also be learning how to add a topic sentence, three supporting details (with transition words), and a concluding sentence to our writing!  Everyone is doing great!!  We will get some journal entries on SeeSaw this week too! :) 

Social Studies

We will keep working on a research project with a partner! Each group will highlight and study one characteristic of a good citizen! Characteristics include: responsibility, respect, honesty, kindness, etc...


Math

Science

We will get a little bit messy as we explore these processes in a hands-on way! We will even make a yummy treat as we learn how liquids can be turned into a solid.

Dot Day!!



DOT DAY


Today we celebrated Dot Day!  It is a celebration based on the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds!  It encourages students to be who they are and leave their mark on the world! It was so fun!

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts

We will also be working on a few special things to show our special friends when they come on Friday for Special Friends Day! 

Social Studies

In Social Studies we continue our unit on Citizenship and Rules! We will discuss the rules of home and school as well as being a good citizen! We will be working on a research project with a partner! Each group will highlight and study one characteristic of a good citizen!  Characteristics include: responsibility, respect, honesty, kindness, etc...

Math

In math we will be diving deep into our exploration of Place Value. Our first graders will become experts about how to represent two and three digit numbers. They will practice writing numbers in expanded form and building them in different ways. We will be practicing all of these skills by playing partner games and doing math stations.

Science

This week in science we will be exploring how liquids can turn into solids-- freezing, and how solids can turn into liquids-- melting. We will get a little bit messy as we explore these processes in a hands-on way! We will also be planting in our Town Center garden! We are so excited about seeing the plant life cycle first hand and watching our plants grow!

First Grade News September 11th - September 15th

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts 
This week in Language Arts we will continue our spelling review of short vowels.  We will focus on words with the short i sound.  Look for your child's new spelling list to come home on Monday! In writing we will learn how to add a topic sentence and first, next, last to our writing.  We are also focusing on spelling our word wall words correctly and getting rid of "random capital letters" throughout our writing!  

Social Studies

In Social Studies we continue our unit on Citizenship and Rules! We will discuss the rules of home and school as well as being a good citizen! We have been working on our books about being a good citizen!

Math

This week we will be exploring our place value system and how to represent numbers. We will learn about the ones, tens, and hundreds place. This week our first graders will be exploring these concepts in small group guided math, partner math games, and math stations. We will also be starting to add some things to your child's SeeSaw account- so be on the lookout for some great learning! 

Science

 We will be exploring LIQUIDS this week! We will learn about how to classify liquids according to their properties. Some of the properties we will discuss are how liquids can be bubbly or foamy, how some liquids flow quickly and some are viscous, and how liquids can be transparent, translucent, or opaque. If you want to continue learning at home, ask your child about some of the properties of liquids around your home like soap, shampoo, milk, juice, etc!

First Grade Curriculum Night


Curriculum Night - Presentation & Information

Hi Wonderful First Grade Parents!  We so enjoyed having so many of you come out last night to hear about the first grade curriculum and important information.  If you were not able to come please do not worry!  Below you will find our presentation and a handout that we gave that shared our contact information!  Please let us know if you have any questions!

First Grade News September 5th - September 8th

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts 
This week in Language Arts we will continue our focus on writing and working in our journals.  We are also starting our beginning of the year language arts assessments so that we can get students into reading groups and begin working one on one and in small groups to meet individual  needs.  Students have learned about Literacy Stations and have begun going to them each day!  This is a fun way for them to work together with others and have some independent practice on skills we have focused on in class! 

Social Studies

In Social Studies we continue our unit on Citizenship and Rules! We will discuss the rules of home and school as well as being a good citizen! We have been working on our books about being a good citizen! 

Math

This week we will be learning all about efficient ways to count. We will become experts in counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We will also be diving deep into place value and our number system. This week our first graders will be exploring these concepts in small group guided math and math stations. 

Science

This week we will be continuing to explore all about matter! We are learning all about how to sort and classify solids according to their properties. We will also be taking a visit to our school garden to sort and classify solids we can find outside of the classroom!

Service Learning Book Drive:

The 5th Grade Students are hosting a gently used book drive to collect books for schools and libraries that were impacted by Hurricane Harvey!  Please feel free to clean out your at home libraries and send in any books that you would like to donate! Thank you!
