First Grade News January 8th- 12th

What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts

This week in LA we will start a new spelling list / unit.  We will focus on the phonogram 'ee' in words like keep, meet, etc.  Spelling test will be on Friday!  We will also be learning about NOUNS (a person, place, or thing).  Book bags will come home on Monday! Please read your books each night and complete the "Text to Self" readers response on one of your books.  Please return book bags on Fridays!

Social Studies
This week in Social Studies we will begin a new unit on Famous Americans.  Our first person to focus on will be Martin Luther King Jr.  We are creating a class time line to show how events from the past are put in chronological order and affect our world.

Math
In Math we are beginning our unit on addition and subtraction. This is our biggest and most in depth unit we will study this year! We will explore several strategies for adding and subtracting, and we will discuss what makes a strategy "efficient" for us! We will explore these strategies by playing games, completing fun stations, and lots and lots of practice! This is one reason it is so crucial our learners are on Reflex Math at home... we want them to be confident in their facts!

Science

In science we are learning and discovering all about air and weather. We have learned how we can all be meteorologists and track weather data. We will keep track of the weather in Coppell to make weather graphs. We will also track the weather in other various places around our world.
