What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts

This week in Language Arts we will be working on our poetry unit!!  We are having so much fun illustrating poems and writing some of our own too!  We are so excited to show you our poetry folders at the end of our unit!  Spelling Lists and Book Bags will come home Monday!!  Everyone is doing great, keep it up! 

Social Studies



In Social Studies we will continue our unit on Map Skills, Land Formations, and Directions. We will be learning about the topography of our country as well as focusing on why maps are important to us and how to use them!  We are also doing some fun Social Studies Stations! 


Math

This week we will be learning all about fractions! We will be practice separating wholes into equal parts. We will learn about halves and fourths. We are so excited to build a really strong foundation in fractions that will help us for the rest of our math career!



Science

We are learning all about habitats! We are researching all about different habitats and the animals that live there. We will learn about the arctic, desert, forest, rain forest, wetland, and ocean habitats! We will also learn about how animals adapt and survive in these habitats.

May 14th, 15th, 16th - STAAR Testing for 3rd, 4th, and 5th

Tonight is our TCE Hoedown! This is such a fun event for our learners. We hope to see you all there!
And you might just see your favorite first grade teachers manning the cotton candy/popcorn stations! :)

April 9th - 12th


What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts

This week in Language Arts we will continue to learn about parts of speech by discussing adjectives and verbs.  We will be adding some adjectives to our journal writing and adding it to our new journal checklist!  We have become such good writers!  We will also begin a new spelling unit on words with -ow sound.  Spelling test will be on Thursday, April 12th.  Book bags will go home Monday and be due back on Thursday, April 12th as well!  We are working hard to polish our writing and reading skills as we begin to get ready for 2nd Grade!!! 

Social Studies


In Social Studies we will begin a new unit on Map Skills, Land Formations, and Directions.  We will be learning about the topography of our country as well as focusing on why maps are important to us and how to use them! 

Math

This week we will be finishing our learning all about 2D and 3D shapes! We will be making google slideshows with shape riddles. We will also be doing some fun hands-on stations to finish up our unit!

Science

We will be learning all about animal adaptations and how animals have certain features to help them survive in their environment! We will learn about their coverings and how they move to help them survive!

We are also SO excited to be observing chicken eggs as they incubate! They arrived on Monday. We will incubate them for 21 days, and then we will watch as they hatch! We have a camera set up with a live-stream of the incubator, so you can watch the eggs at home. We will also have the live-stream going when the chicks are hatching!!

It is already time for spring conferences! Information will be coming home in your child's green folder about signing up for a spring conference!  Please let us know if you have a conflict! 

TCE Hoedown / Spring Auction 2018

We are gearing up and getting ready for our favorite and biggest fundraiser for the year for TCE! Our annual TCE Hoedown will be Friday, April 20th from 5:00-8:00pm. We need everyone who can help volunteer in order to pull off this great event for our kiddos and the community.

March 26th - March 28th


What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts 

This week in LA we will focus on compound words in our spelling!  Remember not to leave a space between your words when you write them (not blue bird, write bluebird).  We will have a test on Friday!  Book bags went home Monday, please read and return on Friday! You all are doing such a great job reading, keep up the good work!  We will keep working in our journals we are practicing using lots of adjectives in our writing to help support our ideas and make our writing more interesting! We will also learn how to write procedural text this week too!

Social Studies

In Social Studies we are starting a new unit on Economics! 
We will learn about goods and services and needs and wants.  We will also discuss how needs and wants change over time.  

Math

In math this week we will be learning all about 3D shapes! We will learn about their faces, edges, and vertices and different ways we can classify these shapes. We will explore real-world examples of these shapes as well.


On Thursday, we will be hosting a "3D Shape Museum!" We are asking that each child bring in ONE example of a 3D shape from home. (For example, a baseball for a sphere, a tissue box for a rectangular prism, or a paper towel tube for a cylinder). Please don't send anything valuable or breakable. These will be sent back home on Thursday! 


Science

This week we will be learning all about living and non-living things! We will learn about what living things need and how they grow and change. We will also learn about how adult and baby animals resemble their parents and have similar traits. 

We will also be having a very special arrival coming on MONDAY. Here's a little sneak peak:

Cultural Celebration Night


TCE is hosting its first ever Cultural Celebration Night on Wednesday, March 28th from 5:30-7:00. This will be an evening to celebrate ALL of the wonderful cultures we have represented at Town Center. There will be games, food, crafts, and performances. We would love to see you there!

Field Trip

First Grade will be taking a field trip to AT&T Stadium on April 5th! We are so excited to hear all about how the stadium was built and to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium! Please return field trip permission slips and money ASAP!

On the day of the trip please make sure your child wears:
*Comfy shoes for walking
*Purple First Grade T-Shirt

And please make sure your child brings: 
*A sack lunch with their name on it
(everything needs to be able to be thrown away)
*If they would like to bring a ball, we will have time to play on the field!

Happy Spring Break / Field Trip Save The Date

Happy Spring Break

First Grade Families -- we so hope everyone enjoys a wonderful week next week! Stay safe and enjoy your time off!  We will see everyone back at school on Monday, March 19th!

Thank you so very much for all of your wonderful support this week!  We so appreciate you coming out to see all the kids work at Open House and coming to our spirit rally performance this morning!  The first graders have been working so hard and we appreciate you sharing in their successes with us!  Thank you!!

First Grade News: March 5th - 9th


What We're Working on This Week:


First Grade Curriculum:

Language Arts / Social Studies

This week in LA and SS we will wrap up our study of Famous Americans and the history of America!  We have learned so much and we cannot wait to share it with you at Open House!  We also practiced our research skills and writing skills while focusing on this unit!  It is awesome!

We will be assessing for the third nine weeks report cards this week as well!  

We will NOT have spelling words or book bags this week!  Happy almost Spring Break!

Math

In math this week we will be continuing to work on applying our addition and subtraction strategies to solve word problems! We will learn about looking for key words, applying strategies, and checking our answers. We will also write our own word problems and solve them for each other. 

Homework note: PLEASE make sure your child is doing Reflex Math for 15 minutes 2 times a week. It is crucial that our learners are practicing their addition and subtraction facts outside of class time.



Science

In science this week, we will be continuing to learn all about plants! We will plant lima beans and wheat seeds in a classrooms this week and watch them grow. We will become experts about all the parts of the plant and how each part functions to keep the plant alive!

First Grade News: February 26th - March 2nd


What We're Working on This Week:

First Grade Curriculum:
Language Arts

This week in spelling we will focus on words with the -ie and igh phonograms.  In Writing we will continue working on writing about historical figures and other non-fiction text. We are also going learn about VERBS and practice writing poems as well!

Social Studies
This week in Social Studies we will wrap up our unit on Famous Americans. We will focus on Betsy Ross and the founder of our country!  The kids have really enjoyed this unit and have gotten into the history of our nation and those who helped to shape it!  It has been very fun!
