Kindergarten News: October 31st- November 4th

What we’re
Workin’ on this week..
Language Arts / Social Studies
Starting on Tuesday, November 1st the kindergarten students will be working on a new unit on Thanksgiving!  We will learn about the Pilgrims and the Native Americans and their journey together.  We will also learn how to use two different research websites and complete some research on the holiday of Thanksgiving.  It is our hope that all of our research and learning stations will lead to a very fun and exciting Kindergarten Thanksgiving Feast on Friday, November 18th!
We will also continue to work on using our journal checklist in our writing.  I am attaching a copy at the bottom so that you can see what skills we are practicing in our writing!  We are doing great!
Lastly we will learn two new words: "to" and "have."

Math

This week we will continue to work on comparing numbers! We have been discussing the vocabulary greater than, less than and equal to. Try pulling two different amounts and having your child compare the two amounts using the correct vocabulary greater than, less than or equal to. Have them show you how we can show that we know they are different ( matching 1 to 1, 2 to 2, 3 to 3 and so on! )

We will also start composing and decomposing numbers by using number bonds. This is breaking an amount apart into two numbers. This is an introduction into combinations of numbers that will help them once we start addition and subtraction! Be on the look out for learners sending you their explination of them composing or decomposing a number!

We are also working on seeing patterns in numbers when we are writing. Every learner needs a empty paper towel roll for what we will be doing. We are going to be making a scroll that they will get to build onto as they write larger number amounts! Every year, once the pattern is seen, the kiddos just take off! I cannot wait to show you how high your child will be able to write!

Science

This week in science week in science we will be working on the life cycle of a plant! We will be talking about what a life cycle means as well as how a plant fits into it! Be on the lookout for a flipped lesson that will be coming home soon! (Hint: challenge yourself to look for things that fit into a life cycle, as well as finding living and nonliving things and how you know!) We cannot wait to hear about what all you come up with!

Thank you!!
Today we had our math and science stations! We had so much fun! Thank you so much to the parents who were able to come and help us out! We could not have done it with out you! Thank you Thank you THANK  YOU!!!!!

*Also, there is a blank space left on the counting collections form if you are going to carve a pumpkin. We all talked about how we put 10 things into a cup at a time to help us count large numbers! So if you had 78 seeds there would be seven cups with ten seeds in each, then eight seeds outside of the cup!
Fall nature Walk

We have a fun field trip planned for Kindergarten!  We are going on a Fall Nature Walk to Kid Country/Andy Brown.  The learners will be participating in a fall scavenger hunt that will expand their understanding of nature, weather, and animals.  We will walk around the pond area, playground, and woods.  We will be going on Tuesday, November 15th.   Volunteers will be needed to help with small groups once we arrive at Kid Country. If you would like to help, please fill out the yellow form that was sent home with your child!

(We will walk to Kid Country/Andy Brown at 8:30 a.m. We will start walking back to Town Center at 10:30 a.m.)
